A short distance from Lignano

Gemona and Venzone

Aquileia

Founded by the Romans in 181 BC on the right bank of the river Natisone-Torre, Aquileia became the basis for the Roman expansion into the north-east, the greatest fortification in the north east of Italy and the centre of an exceptional road network.

At the time of the Emperor Augustus, I AD, it was the capital of the X Regio – Venetia et Histria (the tenth region of Italy) and one of the most important cities in the Empire. Celebrated for its city walls and the prominent river port, Aquileia became one of the most important trading centre with the North of Africa, the Middle East and the North of Europe, rich in peoples, art and culture.

The archaeological museum houses precious evidences of its illustrious past. Significant among other things, the collection of jewels, ambers and artifacts of blown glass. Being the privileged meeting point between East and West, Aquileia saw the entrance of Christianity in the third century AD. The Patriarchal Basilica was founded in 313 AD, at the age of the Emperor Constantine the Great. The original mosaic floor of 750 sm, is still intact in its amazing beauty.

With the destruction and desolation that followed due to the invasion of Attila and the Huns, the population took refuge in the lagoons, first in Grado, which became Castrum (in Latin “fortification”) and then to Venice that in the Middle Age became the cultural and the trading heir of the Roman city of Aquileia.

Parco Zoo Punta Verde

These are Punta Verde Zoo Park’s long-standing objectives: visitor education through accurate information, identification labels and graphic displays, workshops, video shows and guided tours; conservation through high standards of care of each individual species in the Park and by taking part in in situ and ex situ conservation programs; research, by collaborating with scientific organizations and universities

Our Zoo Park officially began its activities in 1979. Over the following 20 years, which takes us to the present day, the number of animals in the Park increased significantly together with our commitment to environmental conservation programs.

The Park is improved and upgraded continuously. We reproduce the typical habitat of each species, paying particular attention to the flora. Indigenous plants live side-by-side with tropical species which survive thanks to ponds fed by 30°C thermal water sources, creating microclimates for the wellbeing of the more exotic animals. There are currently over 70 enclosures and they are all built of natural materials like wood and stone.

Today the park occupies an area of 100,000 sq. m. set in a loop of the River Tagliamento, in the north-west of the Lignano peninsula, and hosts over 1000 animals belonging to 150 different species including mammals, birds and reptiles.
